Frequently Asked Questions
What do you mean by "Specialty in Neurodivergence?"
I'm well-versed in ADHD and Autism research, including PDA and ODD, and have taught students of many different neurotypes over the years. As part of my continuing education, I aim to be officially trained by accreditable organizations for all of these neurotypes and more!
Tailoring lessons to a neurodivergent brain, ever dependent on each student's needs, can include things like patience, self-forgiveness, working through frustration and perfectionism together, detoxing from the day before trying to focus, taking short breaks to talk or draw, learning emotional regulation techniques around playing and practicing, setting up external supports for remembering to practice and knowing *how* to practice when you get there, playing music from special interests like video games, and in the case of PDA, handing the student the wheel and making a plan as a team to reach *their* goals.
I'm going to miss one of the lessons I've paid for. Can I roll that over into the next month, or be charged for only 3 lessons this month?
No, but I'll tell you why and give you some options! The monthly rate rolls the lessons, recital venue fees, materials, months with 5 lessons, vacations, and sick days all into one payment. If I charge for lessons "a la carte", the amount you pay and the amount I can buy groceries with can change wildly from month to month, and all those extra charges will make accounting a nightmare for both of us.
Here's what we *can* do: I am always willing to try and schedule a makeup lesson on a different day, or move lesson times to accommodate other events that come up in life. We can plan these in advance, schedule them after a sickness, or do virtual lessons on days when we can't meet in person. That way, you get what you pay for! Don't forget, if you know you're going on a long vacation, you *can* stop paying for lessons during that time, but you'll lose your spot in the schedule.
I want to start lessons, but I can't afford the monthly rate. I may be able to do it if it costs less. What can we do?
There's lots of ways we can adjust lesson fees to fit your budget! I offer half hour or hour lessons, and you can choose to do them weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly, depending on your needs. Group classes cost much less per person, if we can get at least 3 people of a similar age range signed up at once. We can also *absolutely* trade equivalent services!
Is your studio wheelchair accessible?
Hear me out: not *yet*. There are steps up to both entrances, 4 in the front. Please still reach out if you're interested, and I'll invest in a ramp or come to you at the in-studio price.
I didn't practice this week. Can we just skip today's lesson?
I hear this *so often*, especially from adult students. Parents! With kids, and jobs! It's totally normal and human to be embarrassed when you're unprepared. *However*, I'm here to support you as you learn a skill, not shame you for missing practice days. Let's still meet; if nothing else, you'll get a half hour of guided practice, and that counts! Same with your kiddos: if it's all you can do to get them to the studio and they never practice at home, the worst that can happen is that they won't progress as fast as they want to, and that's frustrating enough for them.
